Blue Forest Project was founded in 2026 by a San Diego high school student to take real action to restore local kelp forests. After learning about the rapid decline of kelp ecosystems along the California coast, the project began as a research effort to explore science-based restoration methods such as green gravel cultivation.
What started as an idea quickly developed into a student-led initiative focused on building a kelp cultivation system, forming partnerships with marine scientists, and raising funds to support restoration efforts. Blue Forest Project is currently in its early development stage, working to establish its first kelp growing system and collaborate with professionals to ensure impact is both effective and legal.
Blue Forest Project is currently in its early development phase. Our focus right now is preparation, learning from experts, securing the proper equipment, and ensuring that when we begin growing kelp, it is done scientifically and in coordination with permitted professionals
