We plan to use the green gravel method, where juvenile kelp is grown in controlled conditions before being transferred to permitted restoration efforts led by professionals
Our current focus is cultivation and partnership. Any ocean deployment will be done in collaboration with permitted scientists and restoration organizations
Green gravel is a kelp restoration technique where juvenile kelp is grown on small rocks in controlled tank environments. Kelp spores attach to the rocks and begin growing before being placed into the ocean. Once deployed by permitted professionals, the kelp continues growing naturally and can develop into full kelp forests. This method increases survival rates and allows restoration to be done more efficiently and responsibly
Kelp forests along the California coast have declined due to warming ocean temperatures, marine heatwaves, and sea urchin overpopulation. When kelp disappears, marine life loses a critical habitat, and coastal ecosystems become unstable. Restoration and monitoring efforts help support recovery and protect ocean biodiversity.
Blue Forest Project focuses specifically on local kelp restoration in San Diego and operates with full transparency. As a student led-initiative, every donation directly supports hands-on cultivation, monitoring, and partnership-building efforts in our own coastal ecosystem. Donors are able to see exactly where funds go, following the progress in real time, and be part of launching a new generation of ocean restoration leaders.
